WHQR Public Media.

The board of the foundation is tasked with controlling $1.25 billion from the sale of the Wilmington-based hospital to Novant Health in Winston-Salem, N.C., among other duties.

Under the motion, members of the New Hanover Regional board of trustees or any elected official won’t be allowed to sit on the foundation’s board for two years after leaving office, according to the report.

The motion passed in a 4-1 vote.

What It Is:

The Cake Kalk INK SL is an electric motorcycle meant to blur the lines between on- and off-road application. Actually, it’s meant to blur a lot of lines. At 187 pounds, it’s exceptionally lightweight for its power output. Consider that a dual-sport bike like Honda’s capable, and relatively light (for gas) CRF250L weighs 321 pounds.

<!– –>This is not an apples-to-apples comparison, however. The Honda costs $5,200. The Cake is almost exactly double that price, at $10,500. But to stop there would miss the bigger mission.

A street-legal electric motorcycle that’s this svelte opens up a lot of possibilities. There’s no clutch to learn, because there’s only one speed. Twist the “throttle” and adjust your speed. That, and the brakes (one hand-brake on the right handlebar and a foot brake) are all you need to master. Also: It’s way easier to load this EV moto into the back of a pickup, again, because it’s not that burly. And because it’ll never leak oil or fuel or offgas, you could just as easily carry it inside a minivan, too, no sweat. No fuel means no exhaust—and very little noise, too. (Most off-road motorcycles are loud or VERY loud.) That’s less offensive to people around you—and perhaps, if you were reticent to ride before, to you, too.

A dirt bike that doesn’t offend other outdoor users is a revelation, and simply kinder to everyone. Even to your own ears.

<!– –>We knew all this going in. But to experience it is another thing.

Michael Frank

Why We Like It:

If you’ve ridden a downhill mountain bike, you’ll immediately recognize some of the dynamics of the INK SL, which we tested on pavement, as well as a rocky, rooted, technical, private singletrack loop in the Catskills.

The bike has about eight inches of suspension travel, which is less than the 10 inches on the Honda, but not so low that taller riders felt like it was unwieldy, and shorter riders definitely appreciated the 35.8-inch seat height (unladen), which is relatively low for the MX/ADV category. Because there’s no clutch to toggle, the foot pegs can sit farther back, giving your riding posture a boost when you stand, because you’re in a more athletic position. All of this is aided by a relatively short wheelbase, too.

So the INK SL is light, it’s quick and easy to muscle around, and did we mention its throttle is instantaneous? The 42Nm output is there, NOW, at initial twist, and—trust us—that’s more than enough to burn rubber and claw up the steepest trails. (That Honda puts out 22.6Nm, if you want a baseline to compare the Cake to.)

One niggle is that the stock tires lack real bite, the better to roll quiet and offer more road grip (Cake says you can order a set with more aggressive tread). And on the street, this rubber is quiet, and let us focus on the actual driveline noise. Yes, it does make a sound, caused by the chain rollers rotating around the 72-tooth massive rear sprocket. There’s a hint of whir to the electric motor, too. It sounds like there’s a relatively friendly pack of hornets on your tail. Still, we’re talking about a decibel level closer to a freewheeling mountain bike cassette, and nothing even remotely close to the racket of an ordinary four-stroke. Stop, and of course there’s no engine idle at all. That’s glorious. So is not having an exhaust pipe that can burn you, or an engine that is cooking your knees while riding in the heat of summer.

Cake Kalk INK First Ride Review
Michael Frank

Nitpick:

<!– –>Sure, we could dig on the price here, or the relatively limited 53 miles of range. This isn’t a Tesla; you’ll need a dryer (220-volt) plug to fully recharge in 90 minutes. Charging from a 110-volt wall plug takes three hours.

Any gas bike can be refueled on the fly just about anywhere.

Still, Cake, like other e-moto brands, is working on longer term battery plans with solar companies, so you’d set up panels and a spare battery to hot swap during your road trip adventure—leave a battery charging at camp and just be rotating the set. Then again…currently swapping batteries isn’t so quick on the INK SL. It requires turning screws and removing the saddle to get at the battery. It should be like popping a cell from your DSLR. Remove; insert new unit. Ride more.

Also, while the brakes on the INK SL are fantastic and super easy to modulate, somehow Cake engineers haven’t thought through an absolutely obvious function.

Cake Kalk INK First Ride Review
Michael Frank

The bike has regenerative braking to juice the batteries if you hit a long downhill. But you can’t adjust this on the fly, only while parked. And that’s doubly bad for riding dirt, where a simple inclinometer could be preset to kick in down a certain degree of grade. This would emulate four-stroke motos, which benefit from engine braking, so you have more control on the steeps.

Cake’s PR does say such hacks are possible, and that these are still early days for the brand. Software adjustments, rider presets, lower (or higher) top speeds, etc., are all merely a matter of software. And, if you want to use that Tesla analogy, think about where they were a few years ago and how so many people who never owned (or would want to own) an EV before are now buying the Model 3. Cake folks feel like electric motorcycles are already taking off because people want a fun, clean, fast solution.

And having experienced it, we think they’re absolutely, totally, completely right.

Now about that price….

When you’re alone with your thoughts in isolation for weeks on end, it takes its toll. Boredom is one thing, but a lack of social interaction can start to wreak havoc on your sanity and heighten feelings of unease and self-doubt. It’s something thousands of people worldwide have struggled with as COVID-19 hit its peak. In order to get some sage advice on dealing with psychological challenges such as this, we spoke to Felicity Aston, a British polar explorer, expedition leader, and former Antarctic scientist. In 2012, she became the first woman to ski alone across Antarctica as she journeyed 1,084 miles over 59 days, earning a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. Here, she talks about the mental toll of that experience. — as told to Wesley Grover

How to Overcome Isolation and Self-Doubt, According to Polar Explorer Felicity Aston

<!– –>I thought I had prepared really well. Then in the first few seconds of my expedition, certainly the first few days, I realized that I hadn’t prepared at all for the psychological challenges of being alone in that particular environment. The thing about Antarctica is that it’s very otherworldly. It’s absolutely huge and it’s completely empty. When you get away from the coast, there’s no life at all. You’re not going to come across birds or penguins. It does strange things when you’re in that environment day after day, week after week. You feel as if there’s no existence apart from right where you are. That sounds odd to say, but very quickly you start to doubt things you remember.

When I was skiing into this white landscape, the majority of days were pretty shocking, weather-wise. A real, proper Antarctic whiteout is almost blinding. You have no sense of up or down. You have no sense of scale. No contrast, shape, or form of any kind. When you’re staring into that nothingness—and this is not over a matter of hours, but over a matter of days, or occasionally it would be a week or more—your brain isn’t getting any data. You’re not really hearing anything other than the sound of wind in your hood, which is like white noise. You’re not smelling anything. You’re not speaking. There’s just no data at all and your brain starts to fill in the gaps with past experiences. It starts to show you what it thinks you should be seeing. It was probably day 30-something of my expedition when I started to have little hallucinations. I would occasionally hear my name being called, for example. I knew there was no one there, but I would hear a voice calling me. When things like that start happening you think, “Okay, this is a bit concerning.” But what can you do? You just sort of carry on. You’re a bit sleep deprived, you’ve been on your own for a while, and you’re dealing with a level of fear that goes up and down. The fear never goes away, but some days it’s more prevalent than others.

One of the big differences I’ve found between traveling with a team and traveling by myself is that by myself there was constantly a voice of temptation on my shoulder that I had to find the energy to defeat. Every moment of every day, there’d be a voice saying, “You can pitch your tent now. You can call it a day now. Just get in the warmth for a few hours.” It was always tempting me to take the easy option and do things that I knew weren’t good ideas. Overriding that voice of temptation took a lot of energy. It was exhausting and yet, when you’re out there with a team, that voice just isn’t there. That was one of the biggest differences going alone.

Michter’s annual release of 10-Year Single Barrel whiskeys is often one of the best things to look forward to for mid-market limited editions, but this year it’s outdone itself.

<!– –>The 2020 release of 10-Year Bourbon and 10-Year Rye leaves Michter’s with a couple of home runs. Michter’s highest-end releases (including the 10, 20, 25, and Celebration bottlings) are well known among collectors for exceptional excellence, and it’s something you can depend on Michter’s to deliver every time. We know this because it’s made the tough decision in previous years to forgo these lucrative releases just because they weren’t good enough.

As with previous years, these are cornerstone Michter’s whiskeys, and the expectation is that it will always deliver three-star value. Michter’s 2020 release of 10-Year Bourbon is one of the most beautiful whiskeys we’ve seen this year. A nose of fresh hewn oak and warm carrot cake gives you a preview of the complexity to come on the palate.

On a first sip, sweet cornbread and butterscotch notes take on some nutty undertones, growing progressively bolder and spicier. As the finish begins, the whole affair turns decidedly toward dessert, with a distinct smack of brown sugar peanut butter cookies. Nutmeg and clove begin to dominate as the finish crescendos, leaving a wooden box full of vanilla, caramel, and lemon candy notes on the tongue.

Courtesy Michter’s

<!– –>Michter’s 2020 10-Year Rye, however, is decidedly more bold. Heavy vanilla notes on the nose give way to a lot of fresh orange—and those aromas are reflected softly on the palate as homemade creamsicle.

On the palate, this whiskey also shows burnt sugar and layers of sweet oak, only hinting occasionally at fruity rye intonations. The finish is spicy and citrusy, showing some summer fresh green rye notes and pronounced heat at the very end.

Both of these bottles poured just the way you hope a great whiskey will in a dream: they’re intoxicating, surprising, and frankly flawless.

And at least at the moment, both are available now, in limited quantities. 10-Year Bourbon is going for $130 and Rye for $160, with secondary demand likely driving real prices higher in certain states. If you can track down a bottle of either of these whiskeys, do so. Among this year’s expected limited edition releases, Michter’s has already made our shortlist for best of the year. It’ll be tough to top them.

There’s something distinctly eerie about the Badlands.

<!– –>It could be the heavy silence covering the 244,000-acre park. Or perhaps it’s the otherworldly rock formations, carved away by water over the course of half a million years.

Or maybe it’s the fact that people have been calling it, you know, the Badlands for hundreds of years. (Even Lakota tribes and early French trappers ended up dubbing the area with the same moniker.)

Want to feel smaller? Head to the Notch Trail in Badlands National Park. Photo: Courtesy of Brandon Scherzberg

Despite the sacred, slightly off-putting vibe of Badlands National Park, the stretch of dramatic canyons and pillars in South Dakota is undeniably beautiful.

<!– –>One of the richest deposits of mammal fossil beds in the world, it’s scattered with the fossilized bones of long-extinct animals and the scuttling of still-alive ones. You won’t drive far before seeing bison, pronghorn, porcupines, and prairie dogs.

And tourists—but it’s easy to escape the hustle of the camera-clad set on the Notch Trail, a slightly demanding and overwhelmingly beautiful hike that thins out the crowds and sets you off on a series of ledges and ladders. At just 1.5 miles, it’s perfect for breaking up the drive and worth a side trip to the Badlands.

Hike the Notch Trail

From the trailhead at the north end of the Door and Window parking area inside Badlands National Park, this 1.5-mile round-trip trail is rated moderate to strenuous, but anyone remotely in shape can handle the minimal elevation gain.

Hikers follow a twisting trail through a canyon bed and up a rope-ladder staircase to a dry ledge. If you have a fear of heights or trouble walking, choose a different trail.

The Notch Trail's end point offers a scenic overlook of a rocky valley and muted sky. Photo: Brandon Scherzberg

Walk through the towering canyon walls and eventually the trail will deposit you at the Notch viewing area, which overlooks the White River Valley.

<!– –>There are no fences, boardwalks or warning signs, so use caution, as the cliffs are unstable in places, especially after rain. Plan your hike near sunrise or sunset for the best color and light for pictures.

Drive the Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway

One of the top drives in the country, cap off your Badlands trip with this winding 31-mile trek through the stunning buttes and spires of the park.

Visit Crazy Horse Memorial

While Badlands seems quiet at first, wildlife abounds and you'll get a glimpse if you stay an hour or two. Photo: Johnie Gall

Think Rushmore, but even more massive. Crazy Horse Memorial affords visitors a glimpse at just what a complex and arduous task it is to carve a giant statue into a mountain.

Stop by Wall Drug Store

East Coasters can compare this sprawling tourist trap to South of the Border. What was once a drugstore in a 231-person town has evolved into a $10-million-a-year business drawing in 2 million visitors annually. It’s kitschy fun that’s certainly worth a stop.

Editor’s Note: As always, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s best to check the NPS website for restrictions and closures before heading to the park.

The Active People, Healthy NationSM Initiative from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a mission of helping 27 million Americans become physically active and “creating an active America, together.”

ACE—with our mission of Getting People Moving—is proud to support this important initiative. A key value that ACE shares with Active People, Healthy NationSM is equitable and inclusive access to opportunities to be physically active, regardless of age, race, education level, socio-economic status, disability status, sexual orientation or geographic location.

There are three distinct elements involved in reaching that 27 million milestone:

  1. Inspiring inactive individuals to perform at least one 10-minute session of moderate-intensity physical activity each week,
  2. Motivating people who are already somewhat active to perform enough physical activity to meet the minimum aerobic physical activity guidelines and
  3. Empowering youth to be physically active for at least 60 minutes every day.

So, what can you—and your approximately 90,000 fellow ACE Certified Professionals—do to become ambassadors for Active People, Healthy NationSM and help the CDC achieve this mission?

ACE Certified Personal Trainers, Health Coaches, Group Fitness Instructors and Medical Exercise Specialists are perfectly positioned to empower and inspire people to get moving, or to get moving more. For many of the people this CDC initiative is designed to reach, understanding the need for behavior change—and acquiring the tools to achieve it—are essential first steps.

In addition to encouraging current clients to add to their routines to reach certain physical activity–related milestones, exercise professionals and health coaches can participate in community-based programs that impact sedentary and inactive people they might not otherwise reach. Inspiring someone to participate in a single exercise session each week, even if the workout lasts only 10 minutes, can show someone who has negative associations with physical activity that it can be a fun and enjoyable experience, which may set them on a new path toward more regular physical activity.

Programs focused on youth present another opportunity for ACE Certified Professionals. Many children who have overweight or obesity have had negative experiences with physical activity, so the key here is to offer well-rounded exercise experiences that focus on fun and movement, not competition and comparison.

ACE would like to challenge you to be creative as you think of ways to reach out to individuals who are currently inactive, as well as new ways to empower existing clients to increase their physical-activity levels. Use the ACE Mover Method and other behavior-change principles and tools to meet people where they are in terms of both their health and fitness levels and their readiness to change their behavior. And remember, every person you reach is one more step toward achieving that 27 million milestone and, more importantly, is another person you have helped take ownership of their personal health and fitness or make progress on their personal journey toward better overall wellness.

Downhill racing is a game of seconds. It’s that simple. More than any other discipline of mountain biking, its focus is unambiguous, pure, easy to quantify and impossible to perfect. It’s a journey our sport has been on, literally since the birth of the sport itself. That’s why downhill bikes are the most advanced, alien-looking creatures on two wheels. Their evolution has undergone an unnatural acceleration over the decades, and the game of seconds is now a game of fractions of seconds. And that’s why, when we see updates on a bike that competes at the level that the Canyon Sender CFR, those updates may seem subtle at first, but are all the more ingenious because of it.

Photo: Courtesy of Canyon Bikes/BIKE Magazine

<!– –>Take the 2021 CFR’s new shock mount. The rear (or “lower”) mount is still is compressed using a similar scissor-like linkage to the previous-generation Sender or, more recently, the new Specialized Demo and Enduro. But it’s been updated to be a bit more progressive. The front (“upper”) shock mount is now lower on the frame, closer to the bottom bracket. It required less reinforcement to find a home there, allowing the front triangle to be a bit lighter and the center of gravity to be a bit lower.

canyon bikes
Photo: Courtesy of Canyon Bikes/BIKE Magazine

Also lighter, but far more than a bit, are the carbon chainstays and seatstays. Altogether, the frame on the new Sender CFR is 600 grams lighter than the previous generation. And not as a result of Canyon neglecting durability. In fact, special attention was paid to the pivots, all featuring easy to access bolts, threading into easy to replace inserts.

One such insert happens to be an adjustable rear dropout. You can flip a chip that will bring you from a tight and twisty 435-millimeter rear center to a long and… some other L-word 445 millimeters. But that’s only on the small and medium Sender. Those sizes now run mullet setups, while the large and XL are 29-inch only. Yep, the new Canyon Sender CFR is Canyon’s first 29-inch downhill bike. So, I guess not all of the new Sender’s updates are subtle.

<!– –>The two smaller sizes aim to offer riders left of the bell curve a little more room in the crotch, while leaving the big rear wheels for the high-of-crotch. Their chainstays go from 445 to 455 millimeters. And if a member of either height range wants to run a rear wheel size Canyon doesn’t offer them out of the box, there’s a shock mount that will keep the bottom bracket height in line after the swap.

There’s a similar adjustability on the opposite end of the bike, where the Canyon Sender uses a headset that allows for eight millimeters for and aft adjustment that actually increases or decreases reach by 8 millimeters. Whether by preference or necessity, it’s a way to find the right fit.

And that fit has changed pretty dramatically. The reach grew by 30 millimeters on the XL, by 15 millimeters on the small and by somewhere inbetween inbetween. But they didn’t mess with a whole lot else, size-wise. Same bottom bracket height, same head tube angle, and just a hair shorter in the head tube to try and offset the ride height of the larger front wheel.

There are only two builds in the Sender CFR, one for SRAM loyalists and one for Shimano loyalists. The SRAM build runs on a Boxxer and Super Deluxe Ultimates, XO DH drivetrain, Code RSC brakes and DT 240 hubs and 560 rims and goes for $5,800. The Shimano build runs on a Fox 40 Performance Elite fork, DHX2 coil shock, Saint drivetrain and brakes and DT 350 hubs and 2020 rims, and comes in at a pretty damn impressive $4,700. There’s no aluminum version, no heavier carbon version. These are for racing. That’s what the R stands for.

Bikes are available in Europe today, and will hit U.S. shores soon and you can keep tabs at canyon.com/usa

Closely examine any photo of the Horstman T-Bar, or any glacier other glacier T-Bar, and you’ll notice something peculiar—it sits about 10 feet higher than the surrounding snow. Examining this while reporting on the Whistler Blackcomb’s removal of the historic Horstman T-Bar, we wondered the significance of it’s elevated position with regards to snowmelt.

<!– –>Coastal ski areas like Whistler Blackcomb receive deluges of black and brown carbon (smoke and soot which are the result of burning fossil fuels) coming over the Pacific, depositing itself on top of the snowpack. This carbon buildup reduces the albedo of the snowpack—or the amount of solar energy that it reflects into the atmosphere—increasing its absorption of solar radiation and quickening its melt.

Add skiers and things get more interesting. Skier movement clears the snow and compacts its surface, constantly scraping off layers of black carbon. Compaction reduces the pore spaces between the snow crystals, so they don’t get isothermal quite as quickly. This process, combined with increased albedo, especially in places of consistent skier movement such as a T-Bar path, means that the surrounding surface snow melts away while the T-Bar path remains stable.

What no longer remains stable is the infrastructure. As for the Horstman T-Bar, without the surrounding snow supporting the towers, the surface lift became inoperable, leading to its removal.

<!– –>So what does this mean for glacier health? For skiing at large? Is skiing—ski movement by individuals or by snowcats—good for the health of slopes and glaciers because it’s compacting the surface? Dr. Michele Koppes of the University of British Columbia, who studies glaciology and geomorphology, and serves on the executive board of the Canadian Geomorphology Research Group, says no—and explains why.

“If we were just considering skiers compacting the snow, that has a temporary effect right where it’s going to slow melt out,” Dr. Koppes says. “But the bigger issue at the Horstman Glacier specifically, is that they want to preserve the snow surface through the summer ski season. So they salt the surface in the evenings. This creates an exothermic reaction, which emits heat to maintain the surface snow. And that human impact has effects that are orders of magnitude greater on the glacier health than the benefits of compaction by skiers.”

This salting effect, combined with the carbon outputs of the resort ops themselves, along with skiers traveling to and eating in the Whistler Blackcomb resort nipped that rosy picture in the bud. So how do we protect our glaciers? The only real large-scale solution is with policy. While individuals reducing consumption of fossil fuels is undeniably important, individuals make up a startlingly low percentage of greenhouse gas emissions. The 2017 Carbon Majors report detailed how just 100 companies make up over 70 percent of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

Practically, until consumer taste and consumption of fossil fuels change wildly or there is sufficient regulation and policy for climate change, the future for the world’s glaciers look grim. Dr. Koppes said that in BC, they are lucky to be home to some of the most glaciated mountains in the Americas. But by the end of the century, she says some research argues that BC could see a reduction of more than 70 percent of their mass.

When they ultimately lose their glaciers, BC and many other glaciated regions will see devastating consequences.

<!– –>“Glaciers are our water towers. They store the water in the winter months and then they release it, slowly, over many years,” says Dr. Koppes. “They also release water late in the summer when it’s most needed. BC gets over 90 percent of our energy needs from hydropower. So, when you remove the glaciers, you’re creating more seasonal variability in the amount of runoff in these rivers.”

If BC’s rivers, dams, and people had to rely on snowmelt instead of much slower glacier melt, they could see huge flooding early in the season and have almost no water left by August or September. There would also be huge ecological impacts on their salmon populations, which are both an indicator species for ecological health, and a necessity for local indigenous peoples.

“These big glaciers may seem like they’re passive parts of the landscape, but they are a big part of the ecosystem and they have huge social, ecological, and economic consequences,” says Dr. Koppes. “Their melt out has repercussions that echo from the mountaintops to the ocean bottom.”

Self Doubt Is Sneaky

Earlier this week I was sharing with excitement a vivid and clear vision on a project I’m creating. I had been working on it for quite some time, could see, smell and feel the results in reach. It’s gotten me up super early as of late because I have been so excited to keep working on it. In a split second, with a single statement my whole belief set around myself and this project changed.

He proceeded to tell me all the reasons people wouldn’t be interested, why I shouldn’t focus on it and why it’s not a good idea. I hadn’t asked for his opinion.

My mood shifted. I felt myself sinking, shrinking, doubting and even wondering if I shouldn’t do it. I questioned if I was “good enough” “smart enough” or even capable to do this. POOF. Just like that. Imposter syndrome snuck up. Ugggggghhh Something I was so driven and focussed in creating and one person, one moment of sharing those doubts had me questioning MY vision.

I questioned myself for a good part of the day and then shifted back to why it WOULD work. Thank goodness I knew how to interrupt that self doubt.

Does this ever happen to you? You let someone ELSES doubt creep into YOUR vision? STOP.

Or, do you sprinkle self doubt on others? If you do, please also STOP.

Creative concepts, solutions , problem solving and even general HAPPINESS is created with IDEAS that first “someone” doubted. People reflect their OWN giving up on their dreams on others. They may even do it well meaning to “save you from the pain they had.” But that’s not helpful and it is dream killing. Do not listen to others opinions about your vision and better yet DO NOT ASK their opinion.

Instead, listen to YOUR heart, your gut and instead of asking, DECLARE what you are stepping into and collect people in your life that believe in you, support your vision and encourage you to go for your dreams. Those are the true friends.

Ya know what ACTUALLY determines success or failure? YOUR BELIEF SET. If you believe you will achieve, you will…

You are not too old and it is not too late….

XO,

Natalie Jill
